New Year's Gift: Petroleum price increase approved

New Year's Gift: Petroleum price increase approved

ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Syed Yousaf Raza Gilani on Friday approved Oil and Gas Regulatory Authority’s (Ogra)summary on the increase in petroleum prices.
Petrol prices will increase by Rs4.88 per litre from January 1 while prices of kerosene oil, high octane and diesel will go up by Rs 3.75, Rs5.64 and Rs4.14  per litre respectively.
The increase in petroleum prices will be due to the increase in prices of petroleum products in the international market, said the summary sent to the prime minister.
Oil prices have traded close to recent two-year highs, as traders continued to absorb news that US crude reserves fell by more than double market expectations last week.
Ogra will announce the new prices of petroleum products today at 11 pm.

Malik, Kamran and Kaneria to appear before PCB committee

Shoaib Malik, Kamran Akmal and Danish Kaneria will appear before the PCB's integrity committee in Lahore on Thursday as the board considers their future involvement with the Pakistan side.
The three have not played for Pakistan in any format since the summer tour to England, having not been cleared for selection by the integrity committee. Though the board has made no official comment and not charged the players, it is understood it has concerns about the trio.
Accordingly, none have been picked for various squads; Kaneria was in the Test squad for the South Africa series but was prevented from travelling by the board to the UAE at the very last minute. Akmal even wrote to the ICC to ask whether he was the subject of any corruption inquiry or case and was subsequently told there was nothing on him.
The integrity committee asked the players to submit details of their bank accounts, assets and property holdings from the last three years. Kaneria has done so while Malik and Akmal are understood to have submitted their details in the last week.
The ongoing inquiry has led to Pakistan delaying the naming of their 30 probables for the 2011 World Cup. Ordinarily, Akmal and Malik would be automatic selections in the 30 and more than likely in the final 15 as well, but the ICC has granted Pakistan an extension until January 5 to decide.
After the meeting, chaired by board chairman Ijaz Butt and attended by senior board officials, the selection committee will sit down, likely on Friday, to give shape to the ODI squad for the New Zealand series as well as the World Cup probables.

New Zealand v Pakistan, 3rd Twenty20, Christchurch

All-round Razzaq flattens New Zealand

Pakistan 183 for 6 (Shehzad 54, Razzaq 34*, Franklin 2-12) beat New Zealand 80 (Styris 45, Afridi 4-14, Razzaq 3-13) by 103 runs

Abdul Razzaq pummeled an 11-ball 34 to propel Pakistan to 183, before returning to flatten the New Zealand top order with the new ball, as the visitors stormed to a 103-run victory in the third Twenty20 in Christchurch. Razzaq capitalised on some inexperienced death bowling from Adam Milne to hammer 31 from the last nine deliveries of the innings, and picked up three wickets for 13 as New Zealand imploded dramatically, effectively surrendering the game within the first three overs of their chase.
The chase was derailed almost before it had begun as the top four batsmen all collected ducks. Martin Guptill began the catastrophic collapse when he edged Razzaq to point, pushing away from his body with hard hands to one that nipped away a touch. Jesse Ryder turned in his third failure of the series in the following over when he top edged a pull, and Dean Brownlie's decision to sneak a quick single to get off the mark backfired when Shahid Afridi effected a rare Pakistani direct hit. Ross Taylor was unfortunate to be adjudged lbw to one that struck him slightly above the knee roll, but didn't do himself any favours by playing all around the straight delivery. Three overs into the innings, New Zealand had lost four wickets for three runs, and when James Franklin lost his head, and his middle stump, two overs later, there was only one direction the match was heading. New Zealand had made 11 runs for the loss of five wickets from their first five overs. Pakistan were 51 for no loss at the same stage.
Styris resisted bravely, throwing his bat to collect a couple of boundaries over cover in Razzaq's last over, and even swatting a six over midwicket to give the Christchurch crowd something to cheer about, but with the required run-rate tipping 15, and wickets falling regularly at the other end, there was little he could do. Peter McGlashan dragged Abdur Rehman onto the stumps attempting to reverse sweep and Nathan McCullum didn't hang around long, succumbing to Shahid Afridi's straighter one. Styris eventually fell for 45, and Afridi wasted little time cleaning up the tail - an 134 kph arm ball to dismiss Tim Southee first ball being the highlight of his spell. Styris aside, none of the other New Zealand batsmen managed double figures. They made 28 collectively.
Pakistan's impressive total was set up by an explosive opening partnership between Ahmad Shehzad and Mohammad Hafeez, who blasted 81 in 8.4 overs to set pulses racing at the AMI stadium. Shehzad in particular, was quick to punish anything on a length, peppering the midwicket boundary repeatedly, while also driving through the covers when the ball was pitched up. Hafeez too got into the action scooping Mills over the shoulder for four, before unfurling a wristy swat that sent the ball sailing over deep square-leg a few overs later.
The introduction of slow bowling into the attack did the trick for New Zealand though, as both openers perished attempting to maintain the frenetic scoring rate, and three more wickets followed soon after. Younis Khan was run out, attempting a suicidal single, Asad Shafiq was caught on the boundary after having used up 15 deliveries for his 8 and Shahid Afridi departed for a quickfire 14.
Umar Akmal kept Pakistan ticking with some intelligent hitting, but it was Abdul Razzaq who boosted the visitors' total and swung the momentum decidedly Pakistan's way with a brutal display of power hitting. Razzaq swung in the V, launching Tim Southee twice over midwicket before taking on Milne in the last over. Razzaq smoked the short deliveries over cover, and sent the fuller ones racing along the ground to the boundary, and 19 runs came off the last five deliveries, despite Milne's best efforts to vary the pace and find the blockhole.

Violent deaths in Iraq fall 'but at slower rate'

Violent deaths in Iraq fall 'but at slower rate'

Aftermath of a bomb on the edge of Baghdad, Iraq (8 Dec 2010)Bomb attacks still take place almost daily across most regions of Iraq

Struggle for Iraq

  • Guide to political groups in Iraq
  • Iraqi hopes and fears for government
  • Lives of fear for Iraqi Christians
  • Iraqis on life during US invasion
The number of civilians killed by violence in Iraq in the past year was the lowest since the 2003 US-led invasion, a rights group has said.
Iraq Body Count (IBC), which collates casualty reports, said deaths dropped by 15% from 2009 to just under 4,000.
It said two bombs exploded each day on average, each killing four people.
But the group warned the number may have reached an "impassable minimum", and that civilians were likely to die at a similar rate for years to come.
In its annual report, IBC said 3,976 people had died violently in Iraq over the past year, compared to 4,680 in 2009. Of the 2010 deaths, 66% were caused by insurgent bomb attacks.
The capital Baghdad and the northern city of Mosul were the worst affected areas.
"After nearly eight years, the security crisis in Iraq remains notable for its sheer relentlessness: 2010 averaged nearly two explosions a day by non-state forces that caused civilian deaths," IBC said.
"As well as occurring almost daily, these lethal explosions can happen almost anywhere, with 2010's attacks occurring in 13 of Iraq's 18 administrative regions."
'Persistent conflict'
IBC said that a marked fall in the rate of deaths after the US forces ended their combat mission on 31 August was "somewhat more hopeful".
Women mourn relatives killed by a bomb in Baghdad, Iraq (15 Dec 2010)
The date was "followed by an immediate halving in the number of civilian deaths between August and September, and lowered levels have continued into the winter months", it said.
But while the number of deaths has continued to fall since a peak in 2006 and 2007, the rate of decline has also dropped, from 50% and 63% in previous years.
IBC said that while any reduction in the rate of violence was welcome, "the slowdown in reductions is indicative of an impassable minimum that may have been reached".
"Taken as a whole and seen in the context of immediately preceding years, the 2010 data suggest a persistent low-level conflict in Iraq that will continue to kill civilians at a similar rate for years to come."
A total of 4,470 coalition military personnel have died in Iraq since 2003.
The BBC's Jim Muir in Baghdad says that while no-one can claim to have wholly accurate figures on civilian deaths in Iraq, IBC has established itself as probably the most respected and quoted source on this very controversial issue.
Its annual review comes as a reminder, our correspondent adds, that while levels of violence have come down sharply, people are still being killed here every day.
IBC arrives at its figures by cross-checking media reports or body discoveries with eyewitness accounts and interview with officials and medical or morgue workers.
Overall, the group says 108,398 Iraqis have died in violence since 2003 - about one in every 1,000 people in the country. The figures are much higher than those reported by the Iraqi government.
But IBC says an initial analysis of data in secret US military document released by Wikileaks indicate another 15,000 civilian deaths could be added to the count.

Amir, Asif refuse to participate in ICC teleconference

KARACHI: Cricketers Mohammad Asif and Mohammad Amir have refused to attend the International Cricket Council (ICC) teleconference scheduled today to share their views on a request by Salman Butt to delay a spot-fixing hearing.

The conference was to be attended by the lawyers representing Pakistan's suspended trio Salman Butt, Mohammad Asif and Mohammad Amir.

The ICC opted for a teleconference to discuss a request by Salman Butt to delay spot-fixing hearing, which is supposed to take place from January 6 in Doha.

Mohammad Amir is against the idea of delaying next month's spot-fixing hearing as he is looking for a quick verdict on the issue.

Speaking at Geo's morning show Tuesday, Amir said that he wants a quick verdict so that he can make the cut for Pakistan's team for World Cup 2011 that gets underway in February.

Updated at: 1016 PST,  Wednesday, December 22, 2010
India test-fires Prithvi-11 ballistic missile BHUBANESWAR: The Indian military claimed to have successfully tested two short-range nuclear-capable missiles from a facility in the east of the country Wednesday.

The domestically-developed Prithvi-II surface-to-surface missiles were tested as part of a routine exercise at the Integrated Test Range in Chandipur-on-sea in the state of Orissa, S. P. Dash, the range director, said.

The Prithvi-II missile has a range of 350 kilometres (220 miles) and can carry a conventional or nuclear payload.

The weapon was last tested from same launch site on September 24 this year, when it failed due to technical problems.

"Prithvi-II missile had proved its robustness and accuracy repeatedly during many trials earlier," a Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) official told the Press Trust of India news agency.

Tron leads weak pack of newcomers at box office

Tron leads weak pack of newcomers at box office

LOS ANGELES: "Tron: Legacy," a costly 3D sci-fi movie that Walt Disney Co has promoted for more than three years, opened disappointingly at the weekend box office in North America, while a new comedy starring Reese Witherspoon was one of the biggest flops of the year.

The "Tron" movie, a massively hyped sequel to an obscure 1982 movie, earned $43.6 million during its first three days of release, Disney said Sunday. Industry observers had been expecting a three-day start in the $50 million range, although Disney said the opening was within its own expectations.

The effects-laden update reportedly cost $170 million to make, and more than $100 million to market worldwide. Disney never divulges budgets.

Internationally, the film earned a modest $23 million from No. 1 openings in all 26 of its markets, including Japan, Australia, Britain and Brazil. These markets represent about half of the international sales pie.

Meanwhile "How Do You Know" opened at No. 8 with just $7.6 million in the United States and Canada, far short of modest expectations in the $12 million range. The Columbia Pictures project cost about $100 million to make, with half the budget spent on salaries for Witherspoon, co-stars Jack Nicholson, Owen Wilson and Paul Rudd, and writer/director James L. Brooks. Extensive reshoots also drove up costs.

Executives at the Sony Corp unit were despondent about the opening, although the film had suffered bad buzz for some time with no help from a forgettable title.

A third newcomer did not do much better. "Yogi Bear," a live-action/animated update of the old television cartoon, came in at No. 2 with $16.7 million. Distributor Warner Bros. said it had hoped for an opening between $18 million and $20 million, but the Time Warner Inc unit expected the Christmas holiday would boost business. The $80 million film stars Dan Aykroyd as the voice of the title character and Justin Timberlake as his sidekick Boo Boo.

Critics trashed all three films, which vied for the attention of holiday-distracted moviegoers alongside national expansions of acclaimed awards-season contenders Paramount Pictures' "The Fighter" (No. 4, $12.2 million) and Fox Searchlight's "Black Swan" (No. 7, $8.3 million).

Last weekend's champion, 20th Century Fox's "The Chronicles of Narnia: The Voyage of the Dawn Treader," fell to No. 3 with $12.4 million in its second weekend.

"The Tourist," a widely mocked caper starring Angelina Jolie and Johnny Depp, dropped three places to No. 5 with $8.7 million, also in its second weekend. The Columbia release tied with Disney's former chart-topping cartoon "Tangled."

The final weekend before Christmas is traditionally slow, although films often enjoy long runs as school holidays start to take effect. But overall business has been weak for some time, with year-on-year sales down for six weekends in a row.

"A malaise has crept over the marketplace," said Paul Dergarabedian, head box office analyst at Hollywood.com. "The lack of momentum is hurting everybody across the board."

But Disney was bullish about "Tron: Legacy," a project that has occupied the attention of two regimes at the studio in recent years. It has been offering tantalizing glimpses to movie fans at the annual Comic-Con convention since 2008, and raised the heat in recent months with cross-marketing efforts across its theme parks, consumer-products and cable TV wings.

Jeff Bridges returns to "Tron" as a videogame developer trapped in a virtual environment called the Grid. While the original film appealed only to male youngsters, Disney targeted the reboot at men and women of all ages.

But exit polling indicated the film skewed to men aged 18 to 30, with relatively little interest in mainstream multiplexes. Instead, the film's tech-savvy constituency thronged 3D and big-screen theaters. About one-quarter of sales -- $10.3 million -- came from Imax Corp's 234 screens. The film played in almost 3,500 theaters overall.

South Africa wrap up victory over India in 1st Test

South Africa wrap up victory over India in 1st Test

CENTURION: Fast bowlers Morne Morkel and Dale Steyn took a wicket apiece as South Africa completed victory by an innings and 25 runs on the fifth day of the first Test against India at SuperSport Park on Monday.

Sachin Tendulkar was left stranded on 111 not out as India were bowled out for 459, losing their last two wickets for five runs in 26 minutes and 35 balls.

Morkel had Sree Sreesanth caught at third slip before Steyn had last man Jaidev Unadkat caught at gully to give South Africa a 1-0 lead in the three-match series against the team ranked number one in Test cricket.

South Africa were always in control after winning the toss and sending India in to bat after rain delayed the start on the first day.

Morkel and Steyn had ripped through India's batting on a lively pitch, dismissing the world's number one ranked Test team for 136 in their first innings.

Taking full advantage of improved batting conditions, South Africa piled up 620 for four declared, with Jacques Kallis hitting a maiden Test double century and AB de Villiers racing to South Africa's fastest Test century.

Faced with a first innings deficit of 484, India put up a much-improved performance in the second innings to give them heart going into the remaining two matches of the series, in Durban and Cape Town.

Openers Gautam Gambhir and Virender Sehwag both made half-centuries before Tendulkar and captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni put on 172 for the seventh wicket to
ensure that the match would extend into a fifth day.

Tendulkar went on to record his 50th test century.

India resumed at 454 for eight, still trailing by 30 runs.

Morkel struck with the 21st ball of the day when Sreesanth edged a lifting delivery to AB de Villiers at third slip.

Unadkat could only fend a lifting ball from Steyn to gully where Ashwell Prince completed a simple catch.

The second Test starts in Durban on Sunday.

Microsoft's Kinect and Sony's Move take on Nintendo Wii

Microsoft's Kinect and Sony's Move take on Nintendo Wii

Video games used to be solitary experiences spent sitting on the sofa. No more. This holiday season's hottest video game gifts involve getting physical while playing with others.
It was four years ago that the Nintendo Wii took the now-$20 billion industry by storm and transformed people of all ages into gamers, with parlor pursuits such as bowling and tennis played by making arm motions with Wii's wireless remote.
Nintendo's competition is no longer sitting — or standing — still. Microsoft and Sony are finding success with their own gesture-based devices for controlling the companies' respective video game consoles, the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3.
Both of the new systems appear to be hits this holiday season. Online retailers and stores across the nation are reporting shortages. Nintendo's Wii continues to be a hot seller, so the season has come to represent a renewed battle among video game companies for space in your living room.
NATHAN DRAKE: Preps for another 'Uncharted' adventure
Nintendo, Microsoft and Sony each are positioning themselves to grab a greater share of your entertainment dollars.
"Much like the iPhone really kind of reinvented cellphones, I think these motion-gaming platforms are reinventing how you interact with your television set," says Geoff Keighley, host and executive producer of GameTrailers TVon cable channel Spike.
Technologically superior to the Wii, if a bit more pricey, the new motion controllers each have its own lineup of all-in-the-family activities aimed at turning living rooms into high-definition activity centers. Microsoft's Kinect ($150 for Kinect Sensor and Kinect Adventures game) has amusement-park-like water rides and workout programs with fitness trainers who never blink. Sony's Move ($100 for Move controller, PlayStation Eye camera and Sports Champions game) offers gladiator fighting, beach volleyball and party games.
Each system has virtual pets and realistic sports simulations, too. And, yes, each has a bowling game.
Sony has sold more than 4.1 million Move units to retailers since Move's release Sept. 17, while Microsoft has sold 2.5 million Kinect units since Nov. 4. That's still way behind the $200 Wii, which kicked off the new video game movement in 2006 and has sold more than 75 million worldwide.
Heading into the last major holiday shopping weekend, some consumers are finding the Kinect and Move controllers hard to find as stand-alone kits. In some cases, buyers are purchasing entirely new game systems or a collection of games just to get the motion controllers. "We are seeing pockets of sellouts across different retailers," says David Dennis, Microsoft's director of group product management.
•Amazon.com routinely sells out of Kinect and the basic Move package. When it does, you can buy the products from other retail partners on Amazon's site at prices above the suggested retail price. Customers can also buy Move as part of a $400 package that includes a PlayStation 3. "When we get them (Kinect stand-alone sensors), we sell them fast," says Amazon.com's Mike Frazzini. "Same with the Move. The inventory for that has been a little less consistent."
•BestBuy.com is sold out of Kinect online but is working to keep stores and its website supplied. The retailer is also giving out a $50 gift card with PS3 purchases. Kinect and Move are "must-have gifts," says the retailer's Chris Homeister. " While Kinect is selling out pretty fast online, we continue to work with Microsoft to obtain shipments with more product arriving in stores daily and online supplies also being replenished frequently."
•GameStop is spending $1 million to rush delivery of 100,000-plus Kinects to replenish its stores. GameStop.com has been sold out of Kinect, as well as individual Move controllers. "I wish I could say (the Kinect shipment) will be enough to keep us in stock through the end of the month, but I know it won't be," says GameStop's Bob McKenzie.
•Walmart.com has limited Kinect supplies and does not have individual Move controllers either, but most Walmart stores have both systems in stock. Stores that have sold out of Kinect are getting shipments Dec. 26, says Walmart spokesman Ravi Jariwala.
"We are seeing a strong response from our customers for the Sony PS3 Move and Microsoft's Kinect, and we anticipate sales momentum to continue for the gaming peripherals through the holiday season," Jariwala says.
Wii's word of mouth
Few industry observers expected much from the Wii before its arrival in stores in November 2006, but early buyers loved the Wii Sports game that was included. Word about the game spread, and eventually retirement villages began hosting Wii bowling tournaments.
"By simplifying the controller down to natural motions, Nintendo realized they could minimize that barrier to entry, opening up gaming to a brand-new audience," says Jesse Divnich, an analyst at Electronic Entertainment Design and Research.
Holiday sales for the Wii remain formidable with a limited edition red Wii console and new games such as Just Dance 2 and Donkey Kong Country Returns as hot sellers.
Wii has sold 32 million units in the USA, compared with 24 million for the Xbox 360 and 14 million for PlayStation 3, according to Wedbush Securities, an equity research firm. Nintendo's success did not go unnoticed at Microsoft and Sony. Each investigated how to leapfrog Nintendo while building on the success of their own consoles. People desire "a more realistic motion-gaming experience," says Jack Tretton, CEO of Sony Computer Entertainment America.
Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 games already looked better than those on the Wii because of each system's support for high-definition video. But Sony and Microsoft have gone further.
VIDEO: Kinect hands-free control system for Xbox 360
Sony's Move control system uses a new PlayStation Eye camera that tracks the wireless controller in 3-D space. Players wave the controller as a virtual sword or to spike volleyballs.
Not only can you use the Move controller to play EA Sports golf game Tiger Woods PGA Tour 11, you'll be able to use it to navigate menus and control a new first-person perspective in next year's version.
"This feeling of really being on the course, that is something we're working hard on," says the game's executive producer, Nick Wlodyka.
Eventually, game designers hope to "make this an experience where you have coaching in your living room," Wlodyka says. Move's camera and software could be used as a swing trainer — developing skills "that you can take from the virtual world into the real world," he says.
Microsoft's Kinect uses slightly different technology. Its sensors track hands, arms and legs, as well as voices and individual faces in a variety of activities that do not require a traditional game controller. "It makes you the controller, and it allows you to go beyond the imagination of even the creators of the games," says Marc Whitten, general manager of Microsoft's Xbox Live online service.
In the works for February is a Kinect-only program called Body and Brain Connection from the maker of the Brain Age games released in 2006 and 2007 for the Nintendo DS. Its 20 mind-body challenges mix math, logic, reflexes and physicality. One game, called Mathercising, requires players to punch or kick at numbered targets as those numbers become factors of another number on a counter.
"It really takes advantage of the you-are-the-controller mentality. Not having to use controllers really gets you physical with the game," says Katherine Schilling of Namco, which is publishing the game. "Research has shown that not just puzzles throughout the day can help your brain, but if you add a physical element to that, it can jump-start it and have even better, and more fun, results."
A saturated market?
Microsoft and Sony, as well as other video game publishers, hope that these new technologies deliver a gift that keeps on giving long after the holidays are over.
However, there is skepticism that the game-playing audience can expand much beyond the one-third to one-half of all homes that already have video game console systems.
While the new control systems aim to attract new consumers to video games, most available games "remain pretty hardcore" and not user-friendly for non-gamers, says Wedbush Securities' Michael Pachter. "Motion gaming will gradually shift the demographics, and gradually change the future, but nothing dramatic."
"But very quickly, game publishers are going to have to expand beyond the fitness and dance games and deliver motion games that cater to the core video game buyer," predicts Peter Moore, president of EA Sports, which recently released different versions of the exercise program EA Sports Active 2 for the Kinect, Move and Wii.
"Microsoft has got to be looking at how to take Halo and Gears of War and have a Kinect experience" with those sci-fi combat games, he says. The same is true for Sony's Killzone and even a racing game like Gran Turismo, Moore says.
Sony has announced that sci-fi shooter game Killzone 3, out in February, will incorporate Move features, as will combat game SOCOM 4: U.S. Navy Seals, due later in 2011.
At Microsoft, there is discussion of a possible future for Kinect in games such as Halo, but Dennis says, "It has to be a natural fit. It would be hard to sort of force Kinect onto a traditional shooter game."
Game designers ultimately could change the entire shape of technology in entertainment, says Keighley. Microsoft and Sony already offer on-demand movies and TV episodes.
Someday soon, you might surf through TV channels with a Move controller, or maybe by waving your hand in front of a Kinect.
Motion interactivity "will become about more than just gaming," Keighley says. "It will become about how you interact with home entertainment."
About the games
Microsoft Kinect
Price: $150 for Kinect Sensor and Kinect Adventures game; $300 for Kinect with 4-gigabyte Xbox 360.
Features: Currently, there are more than 15 Kinect-compatible games including workout program Your Shape: Fitness Evolved and racing game Kinect Joy Ride. But Kinect's controller-free navigation works with Xbox Live's other offerings, such as movies, music, its ESPN and Last.fm services, and video chatting.
Pros/cons: This first wave of games only scratches the surface of Kinect's truly cutting-edge technology. Halo-loving Xbox 360 owners can woo the rest of the family with Dance Central from the developers of Rock Band,Electronic Arts' Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows and pet simulator Kinectimals. However, newcomers still must use the original game controller to set the system up.
Sony PlayStation Move
Price: $100 for Move motion controller, PlayStation Eye camera and Sports Champions game; PlayStation 3 owners who already have the camera need just buy the Move stand-alone controller ($50). A separate wireless navigation controller with buttons and analog stick can be used in some Move games and in traditional PS3 games. $400 for Move with 320-gigabyte PS3.
Features: The new ice cream cone-looking Move controllers bring wireless gesture gaming to the PS3 with more than two dozen new Move-specific and backward-compatible games, including Tiger Woods PGA Tour 11. The Sports Champions game has been compared to Nintendo's Wii Sports for good reason. Its six activities include disc golf, gladiator duels, beach volleyball, archery, table tennis and bocce.
Pros/cons: Like the Xbox 360, the games are in high-definition, a visible improvement over the Nintendo Wii and past game systems. And when you get worn out, you can pop in a Blu-ray Disc movie. Some use of the standard controller is required here, too.

Price: $200 includes Wii Sports and Wii Sports Resort, Wiimote with built-in MotionPlus and Nunchuk controller.
Features: Has the largest library of motion-based games, including new Super Mario Galaxy 2, Epic Mickey, Just Dance 2 and fitness games such as Wii Fit Plus.
Pros/cons: For many, the Wii Sports games that come with the system — and include bowling, tennis and table tennis among the options — offer all the game play options many casual gamers will ever want. The Wii, like its competitors, does offer online streaming of Netflix movies but does not play DVDs or Blu-ray Discs (only the PS3 plays Blu-ray).
