NUDE SOAP STARS PROTEST AGEISM

NUDE SOAP STARS PROTEST AGEISM

A group of British soap opera actresses appear naked this month in a magazine to raise awareness of age discrimination on television.
According to Jessica Laurence of AOL News, "The stars of Loose WomenEastenders and Coronation Streethave stripped bare for a photo shoot in Best magazine as part of a campaign to fight ageism in TV. Posing completely nude for the magazine's Body Image issue, Gillian Taylforth (EastEnders), Beverley Callard (Coronation Street), Sherrie Hewson and Andrea McLean (Loose Women) protested against the scarcity of roles for older women on television."
BLOG: Are Oscar Winners Healthier?
This is, of course, not the first time that a group of British women of a certain age (or a bit beyond) have stripped for a cause. The 2003 hit comedy film Calendar Girls, starring Helen Mirren, was based on a real-life story of a dozen women in their sixties and seventies who posed nude as a fundraiser for a women's community organization.
Fair or not, the emphasis on beauty and youth is universal. Ancient Greek myths were overwhelmingly about young, attractive heroes and heroines going on quests and overcoming great obstacles. From Sandro Botticelli's 1484 painting The Birth of Venus to Francisco Goya's 1880 Nude Maja, artists have always focused on beauty and youth. There are, of course, some representations of older men and women in classical art and literature, but youth has always been prized.
Perhaps recognizing this, the women wisely target screenwriters. One of the women noted, "Women my age face a lack of parts because writers don't write about women in their 50s. You used to confront ageism in your 50s, then it was in your 40s now anyone over the age of 35 suffers the stigma of being 'too old.'"
NEWS: Dead Sea Hosts Mass Nude Photo Shoot
Though addressing issues of ageism through nudity creates awareness among the general public, it's easier to change the screenwriting world than the rest of the world.
The fact is that there are few good TV and film roles written for older people, male or female. Actors undeniably have a longer shelf life than actresses, though even Hollywood's biggest male stars are offered fewer and fewer significant roles as they age.
Once-handsome but aging leading men like Robert Redford, Warren Beatty, Clint Eastwood, Kevin Costner, Robert Duvall, Richard Gere, and others rarely appear in films anymore. Many have taken producing and directing roles to keep a hand in the youth-and-looks focused business.
Pressuring screenwriters may help, but consumers can also vote with their purses and pocketbooks. Studios respond to box office receipts, and when audiences decide that they want to see films about older women (and men), Hollywood will make more films starring older actors. But an audience must create the demand.
Today's Brad Pitts and Johnny Depps will be tomorrow's Kirk Douglases and David Nivens, replaced (maybe) by Nicolas Hoults and Anton Yelchins. The ageism the women are protesting is partly about Hollywood's narrow vision, but it's also about the numbers.
There are only so many TV and film roles to go around, and an ever-growing population of actresses and actors wanting those roles. A casting director for a coming-of-age script (an ever-popular genre) won't call Jessica Lange, Kate Winslet, or probably even Natalie Portman.
There has never been a society that generally values old age over youth, and it seems unlikely that there ever will be. Youth has always represented opportunity and potential, and the promise of future generations. Favoring youth and beauty over old age seems inherent in humanity.
But it's not a zero-sum game; there's no reason a society can't value its older citizens for their abilities and experience as much as it values youth.

Oldest light bulb still burning after 110 years

Oldest light bulb still burning after 110 years

Oldest light bulb

LOS ANGELES: The four watt bulb, installed in a fire station in Livermore, California, has been declared the oldest known working light bulb by the Guinness Book of World Records.

The bulb was a gift from a businessman in 1901 and with the exception of a brief period in 1903, a week in 1937 and some power outages between then and 1976, the light has remained on.

Lynn Owens, the chairman of the town's light bulb centennial committee, said that the light's longevity has baffled scientists.

He said: "Nobody knows how it's possible. It is a 60 watt bulb and it's only turned on for about four watts but nobody knows why it keeps burning.

"We've had scientists from all over the country look at this light bulb. Of course nobody has ever been able to touch this it," he added.

The bulb has become a major tourist draw for Livermore and a celebrity in its own right. Comedy Central's The Colbert Report did a comic feature for the bulb's 110th birthday.

Latif Khosa appointed as Punjab Governor

Latif Khosa appointed as Punjab Governor

Latif Khosa

ISLAMABAD: President Asif Ali Zardari appointed close aide Latif Khosa to succeed the murdered governor of the Punjab province Salman Taseer on recommendation by Prime Minister Syed Yousuf Raza Gilani.

Earlier this week, President Zardari held consultations with senior leaders of Pakistan People's Party (PPP) in connection with the appointment of Punjab governor at Bilawal House in Karachi. The announcement was made public after an elaborate meeting between Latif Khosa and Prime Minister Syed Yousuf Raza Gilani, which was held on January 9.

Later on the same date, the PM Gilani sent to President Zardari the summary with recommendation for appointing Latif Khosa as new Punjab governor. According to President House’s spokesman Farhatullah Babar, Presdient Zardari today signed the summary.

After the approval by President Zardari, Sardar Latif Khosa has become the 33rd gvoernor of Punjab.

Analysts say Khosa will try to avoid antagonising the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) to tamp down disputes that have paralysed the federal government. Though soft-spoken and non-confontational, he is an ardent supporter of the PPP.

Khosa is the successor of Salman Taseer, the outspoken governor of the central province of Punjab, who was gunned down by one of his bodyguards in Islamabad on Tuesday for supporting changes in the country’s blasphemy law.

Khosa said earlier on Saturday that Zardari had called him along with Defence Minister Ahmed Mukhtar and Finance Minister Hafeez Sheikh for a meeting in Karachi.

“I will accept whatever the decision of my leadership,” he said.

Taseer was fiery and often clashed publicly with Nawaz and his brother, Punjab Chief Minister Shabaz Sharif. Khosa, on the other hand, is soft-spoken and non-confrontational. But he is an ardent supporter of the PPP.

Khosa’s appointment comes just one day before an ultimatum given by Nawaz Sharif to Zardari’s government on Tuesday to accept a list of his demands or face expulsion of PPP members from the Punjab provincial government.

Latif Khosa is a Pakistani senator and advocate, and the previous Attorney General of Pakistan. He was appointed the Attorney General on 19 August, 2008. He co-authored an electoral fraud report with former Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto shortly before her assassination in December 2007. Khosa was one of Bhutto's top aides.

Senator Khosa appeared before the acting Chief Justice Javaid Iqbal in a hearing over the handling of the Iftikhar Chaudry sacking issue. Khosa claimed to be working to have the ex-Chief Justice reinstated.

Latif Khosa has been recently removed form the office of Attorney General of Pakistan on October 10th 2009 due to allegations and on 10 February 2010 as Advisor of Information Technology of Prime Minister Yousaf Raza Gilani.

On 20 July 2010, advisor to Prime Minister Yousaf Raza Gilani on Information Technology Sardar Latif Khosa sent his resignation to the President after developing disagreements with the Premier.

Www Maati Tv Com

The web television will work on the principle of non-corporate parallel media. A project of Interactive Resource Centre (IRC) in collaboration with the South Asian Partnership Pakistan (SAP-PK) and the Church World Service Pakistan/Afghanistan (CWS), MaatiTV will initially have its correspondents in 20 districts and different educational institutions across the country.
In Punjab, Maati Tv will have its correspondents in Lahore, Multan, Bahawalpur and Faisalabad. In Sindh the correspondents will be located in Karachi, Hyderabad, Dadu and Juhi. Balochistan will have its representatives in Quetta and Jaffarabad while in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa it will have correspondents in Mardan, Peshawar and Kohat. The web television will also have representation in Gilgit and Hunza.
The correspondents from these districts will make documentaries on social and developmental issues which will be uploaded on the website. The head office of the web television will be in Karachi.
Executive Director of the IRC Muhammad Waseem told The Express Tribune that the organisation has trained the correspondents in documentary making, “We have worked in different educational institutions on peace building and students will also make documentaries on different social and developmental subjects. We have provided cameras and editing units to our correspondents and their documentaries will mainly only be three-minute long.” The youth does not have a platform to speak about social problems and this television will provide them with a platform to get involved in the social building process, he added.
Programme Manager IRC Nasir Sohail said, “Maati TV will be likeDemocracy Now, a non-corporate media in the US, we have also added the option of blogging in it. People can write their blogs or articles and we will generate debates on our documentaries or our blogs”.
When asked about data management of the site, he said, “We will have multi servers. We have this thing in mind and have sorted this out. Honorarium would be given to the correspondents for making each documentary”.
The television will also incorporate cell phone videos. “There will be a section in which we will have mobile phone videos. People can make documentaries on any social issue and we will upload them,” said Waseem.
Flood relief activities
Maati TV will focus on the rehabilitation work in flood-hit areas through a special segment. “The locals in the flood hit areas will serve as watchdogs. They will make documentaries on the relief activities and we will upload them on our website,” said Waseem. By 2012, 70 percent population of Pakistan is going to be under 30 and that is our target audience. When asked about the financial feasibility of the project he said, “We intend to have google ads and meet our expenses from there. Another option is that we will focus on corporate social responsibility and generate funds for it. If things go as per plan this project should become self sustaining in a year.”

A Filipino man solved his own murder when he inadvertently caught his killer on camera while taking a family snap just moments before he was shot.

Reynaldo Dagsa, a local councilman in Manila, took a picture of his family celebrating the New Year, not noticing that behind his wife and daughter a man was taking aim at him with a gun.
Seconds later Mr Dagsa was shot in the chest and died on his way to hospital, confirmed local police chief Jude Santos.
While he was taking the picture of his family on New Year's Day, the killer appeared and he inadvertently took the picture of the killer with the gun aimed at him.

His family discovered the clue in the photo and handed it over to police and national newspaper the Philippine Daily Inquirer, which ran the image on its front page.
The picture clearly shows the killer stood behind the family, aiming his gun at Mr Dagsa, while another man acts as "lookout".
Mr Santos said: "While he was taking the picture of his family on New Year's Day, the killer appeared and he inadvertently took the picture of the killer with the gun aimed at him."

The gunman was identified as Michael Gonzales, a suspected car thief who was out on bail and seeking revenge on Mr Dagsa for ordering his arrest last year.
Gonzales was arrested for the murder on Monday, although the photographed accomplice, identified as Rommel Oliva, has still not been caught.
Police are also searching for a second lookout, named as Francis Bumjal, who is thought to have been stood just out of shot.
Mr Dagsa, described by his family as a kindhearted man, was a member of the Barangay Peacekeping Action Team, which helps the police with crime prevention.
It is thought that it was his role within the team that led to his death.

Top Pakistan Official Killed By His Own Guard

Adam Arnold, Sky News Online

The governor of Pakistan's powerful Punjab province has been killed by one of his own guards at a market in the capital Islamabad, police have said.

It was the most high-profile assassination of a political figure in the country since former prime minister Benazir Bhutto was killed in December 2007.
The latest victim, Salman Taseer, was shot dead by a member of his elite security team after he reached Khosar Market, police said.
Witnesses reportedly claimed a man fired two shots at the governor as he was leaving his vehicle.
One said: "The governor fell down and the man who fired at him threw down his gun and raised both hands."
The suspect was taken into custody following the shooting at the shopping centre, which is popular with Westerners and wealthy Pakistanis.
Five other people were wounded as security personnel reacted to the incident.
It is not known if the assailant was injured.

Mr Taseer was a high-profile member of Ms Bhutto's Pakistan People's Party and a close associate of President Asif Ali Zardari, Ms Bhutto's widower.
He was vocal on a range of subjects, including speaking out against the country's blasphemy law in recent days.
Interior Minister Rehman Malik claimed the governor was probably killed because he opposed that law.
Human rights groups say the legislation is often exploited by religious extremists as well as ordinary Pakistanis to settle personal scores.
Islamist groups have been angry over what they believe were government plans to change or scrap the law.
They have defended the controversial legislation and slammed those who were against it.

Police Release New Footage Of Royal Attack

Police Release New Footage Of Royal Attack

3:43pm UK, Tuesday January 04, 2011
Kat Higgins, Sky News Online

Police have released new footage of an attack on Prince Charles' car during the tuition fees protests in London in an attempt to trace those responsible.

Metropolitan Police detectives who are investigating the violence on December 9 issued CCTV pictures from the Regent and Oxford Street areas of the city.
It was on these busy shopping streets that the Rolls-Royce taking the Prince of Wales and the Duchess of Cornwall to the theatre was attacked by demonstrators.
Up to 20 people set upon the car, some were carrying bottles and chanted "off with their heads" and "up the republic".
There has been widespread criticism of the apparent lapse in security which left the pair visibly shaken and shocked but unharmed.
The video and images show four people officers from theOperation Malone team would like to trace in connection with events.
Protesters
Although the images are grainy police hope the individuals will be recognised
One shows a woman striking the Royal car and breaking the back window of one of the convoy vehicles.
She is pictured with a man, whom police would like to trace as a potential witness.
Officers are also keen to identify two men seen separately attacking the car.
At least three metal dustbins were also hurled at two other cars in the convoy which was travelling to Royal Variety Performance at the London Palladium.
Detective Chief Superintendent Matthew Horne, heading the operation, said: "The student protests saw a number of incidents of violence escalate across central London, including in the shopping areas of Oxford Street and Regent Street during some of the busiest Christmas shopping periods.
"Police officers were attacked, and buildings and shops had their windows smashed, amongst other acts of vandalism, including an attack on the Royal convoy.

PETER BLEKSLEY ON ROYAL ATTACK

"We believe that most of the people whose pictures we have released today may have committed serious offences of violent disorder and criminal damage in this area and urge them, or anybody who knows them, to come forward and speak to us.
"We understand the importance of the right to protest, but people who break the law and endanger those who wish to protest peacefully by committing criminal offences must face the inevitable consequences of their actions."
Royal security expert Peter Bleksley told Sky News the Royal couple's protection team "fundamentally failed in their duty" that day.
He said it was "staggering" that there had not been a more public examination of what they did wrong so they can face the consequences.
Protests took place across the country in November and December by students opposed to a rise in tuition fees to a maximum of £9,000 a year.
